Unkai Terrace

Photo Taken from Ritemail

Previously, I mentioned on what you can do at Hoshino Resort Tomamu during winter. But during summer, there is another attraction you can visit at Tomamu. And that is the most famous Unkai Terrace. You get to see an unique scenic spot perched high above a mountain peak that is often above the clouds, presenting a breathtaking view of white, fluffy sea breath them. Unkai, which means sea of clouds, phenomenon has been one of the attraction of the resort and widely mentioned in many travel articles. The natural hot springs in the area and the temperature difference when day turns to night determine the formation of a white blanket of clouds over the mountainous region. It was a rare occasion for visitors to see this phenomenon in the past but thankfully, a gondola system is put in place, to transport tourists to Unkai terrace.

However, you need to be an early bird as the cable car operates between 4.10am to 8.30am. There is no guarantee that you can see the effect but right above the clouds, you get to watch the sunrise and Hidaka and Tokachi mountain peaks as they pierce the fluffy fog. The gondola fare is priced around U$20.

The terrace is open for tourists during summer months until late September but even during this period, the sea of clouds can only be seen about 40% of the time. On cloudy days, the entire scenic view is engulfed by thick fog but gondola operators are kind enough to give tourists a postcard of Unkai Terrace’s view when the weather conditions were appropriate 1.
